The Social Media and you

Maureen Mennor Nwaezeigwe

Thanks be to God for social media, because of all the possibilities it has introduced to mankind. Many businesses started and thrive from social media, religious contents are so easily provided and accessed via social media, entertainment has gone to a whole new level of "big", creating many millionaires and even billionaires as we have been told...again thanks to social media. The list is endless.

However, the negatives are also there. But I will briefly touch on one, why? because its funny but not funny that such has become a thing today. We recently in this month of September 2021 witnessed so many outbursts on social media from celebrities bordering on their "very private" lives. Out of respect for these individuals I will not write their names. There was the one of failed relationship saga, where a private audio recording was eventually released making you wonder, like the popular quote in a rested television series of yester years 'The third eye' which featured Olu Jacobs..." I wonder, I just wonder". Then, came the one involving a very frustrated wife who could no longer stand to share her husband with his baby mamas; she literarily had a mental breakdown. Such a tragedy to see a beloved couple become a public spectacle and ridicule. And then came the one involving wife battery and DNA test on public display, revealing that one of the children born by his wife during their marriage was not his.

why has the social media been turned into a family court? it is not and can never be. Total strangers who probably follow you just to be followed back or be seen on your page. You think 90% of the people following you give a damn about you? if you like call them 'fam' or 'lovelies' or whatever it is they call themselves. Sadly, these have just again thrown up the sad reality about people spilling the beans when relationships fail or end. I addressed this in one of my earlier articles which I titled "dont fight your ex, be silent". I see this immaturity everywhere, even from people I respect, and I just wonder, I really do wonder.

Silence is not empty, neither is it weakness, but even if it were, so what? must you fight that battle? must it even be a battle? Why choose the social media as your battle field? because you want to tarnish the image of the person so badly you lose yourself in it. It is really germane to learn to choose your battles. There are levels to these things. Yes there are times to fight, times to prove a point...but not on social media. I had to advice one of our ladies some time ago to watch her postings on her WhatsApp status, lets leave some things to children...but, then sometimes it appears that age is just a number.

Will there be more of such  display of immaturity despite the bashings and insults these people received in this month? oh yes! matter of fact one of them just released an audio crying yesterday, and asking for Insta- live to be switched on for her to post and share more. They forget that the internet does not forget.
